Included With Every Order
Digital Mastering
It begins with a general inspection of the tape to check for damage, then it's run through a loosening cycle on our broadcast-quality cassette decks that are maintained on a daily basis. The audio signal is digitized using our professional grade audio card before our audio engineers do some post-processing on the captured audio. We remove the inherent tape hiss, trim the tracks, amplify and even the levels before re-mastering it back onto audio CD's. Each CD gets marked with simple, easy-to-read identification, then stored in a paper sleeve.

We've added extensively to our audio processing hardware and assembled top-of-the-line equipment to ensure quality transfers at an affordable price. End of an Era?
For a while there, audio tapes were the way to easily distribute sound and music from peer to peer very inexpensively. While the internet may have replaced it, the information on those tapes is still precious, if not a dated reminder of the not-so-distant past. Save them for posterity on CD media sure to last 20+ years. Most manufacturers have discontinued production of blank tapes and tape equipment in 2007, so you know every cassette tape is now considered a relic, and plans should be made to archive important tapes!

Notes About Tape Repairs
If your cassette tape snaps in two and the tape leads remain easily accessible, we'll fix the first tape snap for free. If your cassette tape is so damaged that it requires a donator cassette tape for parts (including re-closable shell casings, internal rollers, or playback tension rods), there will be a $5 charge for each repaired cassette. This includes tape leads that are retracted inside the (un-openable) welded plastic shell.
Jobs requiring repair will require an extended turnaround time as we order non-stock replacement parts. By submitting your damaged cassette tape for digital conversion to Under Design, you acknowledge that you are aware of these surcharges.

Track Markers Included
If we note blank areas separating tracks in your cassette tape recording, we'll include a track marker on the CD, too! No more fast-forwarding! We'll often set track markers just before a song begins in live show recordings, so you can jump right to your favorite song!
Free Audio Cleanup
It's our standard practice with every cassette we convert for our customers: We run a post-recording audio filter on the recording to remove inherent tape hiss, leaving you with a clearer sounding recording! This can remove the white noise from most recordings, but will not magically fix poorly recorded tapes.
No Charge for Blank Tapes!

We're already big fans of the United States Postal Service and it's Media Mail rate. They've recently upgraded their internal computer systems to support Package Tracking, and now we include it as a standard feature with all of our Return Shipping. After we've shipped your job back to you, we'll email you a tracking number and instructions on how to monitor it's commute back to your home.

Schedule To Drop Off Your Conversion
Live in the Philadelphia Area?
Save the hassle of shipping (and the horrific possibility of lost packages!) by scheduling a 30 minute window to drop off your Conversion Job at our offices in West Philly during business hours (Tuesday through Friday from Noon until 6pm). We have survived the past few years of the Covid lockdown and are back to accepting in person drop off conversion work using our scheduler assistant Cal.com; An email address is required, and you'll be reminded automatically two hours before your appointment.
